Ari Lazer

Advisory & Collaborator

Ari Lazer is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Salt Spring Island, BC.  Inspired by the elegance of nature, Lazer has focused his practice on a modern exploration of the classical Quadrivium – the study of harmonic relationship in geometry, number, music and cosmology.

Lazer’s studio practice focuses on creating unique art objects in 2 and 3 dimensions, with a focus on artworks that engage the viewer as a participant in their aesthetic experience. He is well known for his polyhedral lanterns, his interactive kinetic pieces, illuminated landscapes and screens.

Working in wood, metal and mixed media, Lazer’s approach uses the lens of geometric form to explore the stories of the natural world.  Blending landscapes, vegetal forms, and dynamic geometric patterns, Lazer creates unique works that play with the viewers’ sense of space, visual perception, and relationship to their lived world.

Lazer balances his studio practice with his work facilitating immersive environment and stage design for festivals and special events, functional design for businesses and land-based living projects, writing and performing theatre works, narrative stories and improvised theatre.

He has created work with a wide range of organizations including the Vancouver Art Gallery, Beloved Presents, the BC Buddhist Festival, Bass Coast, Motion Notion, the Chicago Cultural Centre, Shambhala Music Festival, and Lumiere YVR, amongst others.  He also has a rich history in curation, event production, and cultural work – as former Artistic Producer for Public Dreams’ Illuminares Lantern Festival and Parade of Lost Souls, and as a founding member of the Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret.

Lazer has held his practice as an interdisciplinary artist, creating large public installations, arts events, theatre and commission work since 2008.  He holds a degree in interdisciplinary studies from the University of British Columbia.
